Today’s grand opening of phase one at the new University of Miami Life Science & Technology Park is about more than the debut of a shiny new building by national research park developer Wexford Science + Technology.
It is the dawn of a project that has the potential to grow into a tour de force in the international biotech landscape, putting Miami on the map as the research and development center that the city has aspired to become for years. Miami, with its diverse population, existing base of international businesses, major health and research insitutes, and ideal positioning at the crossroads of the Americas and Europe possesses all the building blocks to become the next Silicon Valley. Now we’ll have to begin thinking about a catchy nickname for the magic city. Biotech Beach, anyone?
Biotechnology hub at University of Miami opens
A hub for biotechnology and leading-edge translational science at The University of Miami is opening its first building.
The building at the UM Life Science & Technology Park houses wet and dry labs, lab-ready development suites and retail space.
Some space is leased to technology and medical device companies, a blood center, a clinical research firm and the University of Miami Tissue Bank.
The dean of the UM Miller School of Medicine says this is a “giant step toward situating South Florida as the international center for health care innovation it deserves to be.”
Dr. Pascal Goldschmidt, UM President Donna E. Shalala and local officials will attend a dedication ceremony Tuesday.
