Miamians tend to focus on the City’s densely populated neighborhoods, frequently overlooking our community’s thriving agricultural base in places like The Redland and Homestead. Truth be told, rural areas like these are a critical source of fresh produce, jobs and economic impact.
Now, thanks to the Walmart Foundation‘s $100,000 grant to Farm Share, more people across Florida are going to have fresh fruits and veggies delivered to their table.
Farm Share, a local nonprofit, provides fresh food to local communities and populations in need. Founded in 1991, the organization provides over 7 million meals monthly to 600,000 families each year. It’s a unique project, in that the food being distributed to families is locally grown and harvested – and fresh from the ground.
With the Walmart Foundation’s grant, Farm Share has been able to purchase a new refrigerated truck, allowing them to take their show on the road. “Our new tractor trailer will be used to ship over 15,000,000 pounds of fresh and nutritious fruits and vegetables this year to participating agencies throughout Florida.” Not your average stop by the supermarket.
On April 12th, Farm Share teamed up with Florida State Representative Frank Artiles to distribute 50,000 pounds of food to families in need. It’s the first of this sort event that the new truck will allow Farm Share to host around the state.
