Two years ago, the Schwartz Media Strategies team attended the University of Miami career fair looking for the next generation of communications talent. That’s where we met Annemarie, who joined the firm as an intern and is now an Account Coordinator supporting clients including Terra, Gencom, and Bilzin Sumberg.

With career fair season underway ahead of the summer, our own Vicky Cela caught up with Annemarie to recount how that first meeting turned into a full-time role and what students should know before stepping into a crowded room of recruiters.
(And yes – as a proud University of Florida grad, Vicky is happy to admit the Hurricanes sent us a great hire.)

The Conversation That Launched a Career
Vicky: You first connected with SMS at the University of Miami career fair two years ago. I remember the day like it was yesterday! What stood out to you about our firm during that initial conversation?
Annemarie: I remember asking a bunch of questions with the goal of better understanding the company and the opportunities available. From talking with the team that day, I loved that SMS is engaged in a range of industries and that the firm’s services are varied. The team works across social media, public relations and marketing together, which creates a much more integrated approach.
As a graduating senior, that appealed to me because it meant gaining exposure to multiple areas, rather than being limited to just one, and I was drawn to that diversity. As someone launching my career, I was eager to learn as much as possible and SMS seemed like a great vehicle for doing just that.
From Intern to Account Coordinator
V: Did you expect that conversation to turn into a full-time role?
A: Not at all! I was really just hoping to find an internship where I could learn and gain experience right out of college. I jumped at the internship opportunity, because in speaking with the firm during the interview process, it became clear that SMS interns are deeply engaged in account work. It felt like somewhere I could gain hands-on experience and begin building relationships. Within six months, I really felt at home at SMS and the transition to a full-time role was natural and seamless.
V: You started as an intern and are now an Account Coordinator working with clients like Terra, Bilzin Sumberg and Gencom. What has been the most exciting part of that transition?
A: The most exciting part has been seeing how the work we do contributes to larger initiatives for clients that are making a tangible impact in my hometown of South Florida. During my internship, I was learning the fundamentals, and now I have the opportunity to take on more responsibility and work more directly on projects and media outreach.
The Value of Mentorship
V: I also started my career at SMS as an intern, so I know how important mentorship can be early on. What has helped you most as you’ve grown in your role?
A: The team has been incredibly supportive and always willing to answer questions or provide guidance. Everyone takes the time to explain what we’re doing, and most importantly, why we’re doing it. That really helps me understand the strategy behind the work and makes it easier to grow in my role.
Advice for Aspiring PR Professionals
V: What’s your best advice for a student planning to attend a career fair?
A: Be curious and ask thoughtful questions. Career fairs aren’t just about handing out resumes; they’re about starting conversations and learning about the people and culture behind each organization. Showing genuine interest can make a lasting impression. There are probably going to be hundreds of other students in that room, so you need to make sure you stand out. Engaging in conversation and asking questions is a great way to show you’re interested while getting a feel for a company.
Giving Back to the Community
V: Outside of our SMS client work, you’ve also taken time to get involved in the community — most notably, Casa Familia. How has this experience influenced your perspective on community involvement?
A: Casa Familia is a nonprofit in South Florida that develops safe, affordable housing opportunities for adults with intellectual, developmental, and other disabilities. Serving on the Casa Familia Young Professionals board has reinforced how important community engagement is, both personally and professionally. It’s given me a deeper appreciation for an organization making a real impact and how communications can help amplify those missions and connect people with the resources they need.
V: Two years after that first meeting at University of Miami, Annemarie’s journey reflects something we subscribe to at SMS: great conversations are often the start of great relationships. And while I may still be loyal to the Gators, we’re always happy when the Hurricanes send great talent our way.
