“Hometown Democracy” Amendment: Love it or hate it, get your 2¢ in at tomorrow’s debate

Is it hometown democracy – or development standstill?

Commercial Real Estate Women Miami will host a heated debate on the issue tomorrow, Wednesday, from 6-8 pm at the Four Seasons Hotel, 1435 Brickell Ave. It’s a great opportunity to hear both sides of the issue as well as reactions from local real estate professionals who could potentially be directly impacted by this bill – before you hit the ballot box on November 2.

Amendment 4, otherwise known as “Hometown Democracy,”  is one of the most contentious issues on the ballot this election cycle. If passed, this bill would change existing laws to require that any changes to municipal land use plans go before voters for approval.

Proponents of this bill believe it to be the solution to reckless over-development, giving citizens a seat at the table to approve development related land use changes.

Yet opponents foresee costly and piecemeal, ballot-driven planning that would bring development to a standstill.

Come have a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres and hear speakers including Frank Rollason, Florida Hometown Democracy campaign supporter, and in opposition, Stanley B. Price, land use attorney and partner with Bilzin Sumberg. They will address controversial issues including:

– How often would a referendum be issued to voters – three to four times a year, or potentially hundreds?

– What will the referenda look like? Will voters be asked to decide complex, technical plan alterations, or rather be empowered to weigh in on big-picture changes directly affecting their own neighborhood and community?

– What are the potential positive or negative impacts on the fragile Florida economy?

– Will it prevent or promote urban sprawl?

– What could happen to controversial but much-needed community projects like affordable housing or transit?
